OUR STORY

At the beginning of 2010 ZeBU opened its doors to a children’s and youth theatre at Amager Kulturpunkt with the experienced theatre-directors Jørgen Carlslund and Marc van der Velden at the helm. Both creators have been involved with chrildren’s theatre for almost 30 years and have several honours awards and nominations to their name.

Jørgen Carlslund took the first dancing steps way back in 1983 at Corona Danseteater where he became manager in 1988. The same year Marc van der Velden established the innovative Theater La Balance together with Lotte Faarup. Both theatres produced a vast amount of new and innovative shows and performances which went on to tour in both Denmark and internationally. In 2004 they joined forces under the constellation Corona La Balance, and a year later it was chosen to be the country’s first state-subsidised children’s theatre. After a period of four years the theatre got the opportunity to move into Røde Kro Teater’s old venue at Amager, and become Copenhagen’s new small city-theatre. ‘ZeBU’ was chosen as the new name and since 2010 the theatre has laid the foundation for many new productions, guest performances, festivals and cooperative projects at Amager.

As a part of a new strategic plan for the theatre, Jørgen Carlslund has taken the post as sole manager of ZeBU beginning early 2021.

PUBLICATIONS

What is the state of diversity in Danish youth- and children’s theatre? That is the question ZeBU has aimed to answer with the launch of the research project, “A Moment of Diversity”, developed and led by Nanna Bøndergaard Butters. The project is based on interviews, art-based research and literature on diversity with connections to PRIMSA; a project launched to support endeavours towards making Danish children’s theatre more diverse.
