THE NIGHT IS MADE OF GLASS

Juvenile fantasy about youthful lassitude

Youthful lust, budding sexuality and coincidences at a party turn Naja’s life upside down. One day popular girl in 9.A, the next day star whore. It starts on Monday morning in class in the middle of a presentation about Kristallnacht in 1938…

I look up at the sky. The night is made of glass. Glass crackling in the dark, most of all in the dark, right before I go to sleep… It’s also because I put those pants on. The ones with the stars. If I hadn’t been wearing them, Lucas would never have made that star ass snap. Caro says I should pretend it’s nothing. Lucas the asshole suffers from star envy. Of course, when you’re an asshole yourself! If only I had gotten my first kiss from Jonas and not from Rasmus. The rumors probably hadn’t started then. And then I had never held that party. That party was a mistake. On a scale of one to ten, it was a thousand mistakes. If it wasn’t for that party, Caro would still be my best friend. And Jonas maybe my boyfriend? Now Jonas has reported me for violence…

The night is made of glass is about the gray areas in digital violations, and playwright Betina Grove has been very inspired by the podcast “Blackout – The girl in the picture” on DR, which you can listen to by following the above link. Save the Children has also produced very useful material on digital violations. Find the teaching material “Stand forward and say from” aimed at the training by following the link above.

It is also possible to receive parts of the script from the performance for teaching purposes. Contact playwright Betina Grove at betina@teatretsttv.dk if interested.

Tuesday 29th of October at 15.30 – 20.00 ZeBU holds a special course for teachers from all grade levels in connection with the youth performance The night is made of glass by Teatret st. tv.

The course is guided by ZeBU’s two theater educators Anne Nymark and Nanna Bøndergaard Butters. You will be equipped to be able to teach your students in theater play and learning yourself, with a focus on theater pedagogical exercises and the actors’ main tools. The exercises will also be based on the themes of the show. Expect laughter, togetherness and concrete methods you can take home with you in the classroom.

»IT IS DIFFICULT TO IMAGINE THAT THE NIGHT IS MADE OF GLASS WILL NOT CAUSE A YOUNG AUDIENCE TO HESITATE THE NEXT TIME THEY EXPERIENCE THE MASS BULLYING OF THE DIGITAL WORLD. THE PERFORMANCE IS A BRILLIANT EXAMPLE THAT THEATER AND ALL OTHER ARTS CONTRIBUTE TO SOMETHING THAT YOUNG PEOPLE AND THE REST OF SOCIETY CANNOT DO WITHOUT.«

– Randi K. Pedersen, Teateravisen

»BETINA GROVE BOTH WROTE AND DIRECTED THE SHOW, AND YOU REALLY FEEL HER GREAT EXPERIENCE WITH CHILDREN’S AND YOUTH THEATER. THE RAP LINES BETWEEN THE TWO TEENAGE FRIENDS NAJA AND CARO ARE VIBRATING.«

– Michael Søby, CPH CULTURE

»IF YOU ASK IF WE HAVE HEARD ENOUGH? THERE IS A LOT OF DIGITAL VIOLATION – FILMS, THEATER, BOOKS, PODCASTS, YOU NAME IT – THEN I ANSWER THAT AS LONG AS THERE IS ABUNDANT DIGITAL VIOLATIONS, WE HAVE NEVER HEARD ENOUGH.«

– Instruktør Betina Grove
