ANTIGONE

Can one defy the law in the service of a greater cause?

Psychological, political and philosophical dilemmas meet in fiery conflict in a bone-to-bone version of Sophocles’ Antigone performed by two actors and a live electronic musician.

Punishment and conscience, young and old, woman and man, individual and society are pitted against each other when ZeBU and Signe Kærup Dahl present political world literature on stage. Who does the audience sympathize with: the rebel Antigone or the authority Creon?

Throughout the generations, civil disobedience has taken place. How does the state affect the individual, and how do we experience it in today’s conflicts?

The performance is particularly targeted at ancient knowledge at secondary school level.

The story in brief
The twin brothers Polynices and Eteocles fight for power in Thebes after their father – Oedipus – has fled the city. Eteocles is elected king, but the brothers are unclear and kill each other in a big battle. Now Oedipus’ brother-in-law, Creon, must take over and orders that Polynices, as the attacking part, should not be buried in holy ground, but instead rot. Creon announces that there will be a death penalty for anyone who defies his command. Antigone – sister of Eteocles and Polynices – stands in the wings and she is angry. Creon violates the laws of the gods; the family must be buried to gain access to the underworld. Her sisterly duty outweighs the king’s orders: Polynices must and must be buried.
